As an important part of Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative, the Punggol Digital District is an idea to create a dynamic and open-to-all district that houses state of the art technology and social innovation that can transform how we live, work and play.
The Punggol Digital District is the first district in Singapore that follows a holistic masterplan approach to integrate a business park, a university and community facilites together to produce the synergies that can facilitate close collaborations between the university and industry. Hopefully, strong and dynamic communities can be nurtured.
The key growth sectors of Singapore’s digital economy such as cyber security and digital technology are going to be housed at the Punggol Digital District. New job opportunities are expected to be created for residents in Punggol and the north-east region. The intention congregation of these growth sectors inevitably form an ecosystem of open innovation and becomes a contributive testing ground to let business and community flourish in a digital economy.
The closeness of Singapore Institute of Technology’s (SIT) new campus and JTC’s business park will allow greater industy-academia collaboration through the opening sharing of ideas and know-how. Any new ideas in SIT can be prototyped, experimented and adopted by nearby businesses thereby speeding up the commercial success rate of research.
Planned as an Enterprise District, Punggol Digital District allows its space to varied mixed usage to create multiple integration. For instances, SIT’s reseach facilitites could be located within the JTC’s business parks buildings thereby allowing for more integrated use of space.
The needs of the startup community is well provided for as there are plans to locate new facilites such as a new hawker centre, community centre and childcare facilities with the district, as well as parks and communal spaces to help the community thrive.
